As part of Stevenage Borough Council’s aesthetic improvements to the town centre, the walkway through the Arts and Leisure Centre on Lytton Way is being refurbished.

It features a pictorial on one wall of the walkway showing photographs of the town’s sporting personalities including Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton and golfer Ian Poulter, part of this year’s winning Ryder Cup team as well as Ashley.

It was opened yesterday afternoon by the England star, his brothers and the town’s mayor Councillor Sherma Batson.

She said: “I’m very pleased that Ashley unveiled the last panel. Stevenage has an incredible sports and arts heritage – some of the world’s biggest stars have links to our town and we’re immensely proud of them.”

Councillor Howard Burrell, who is responsible for culture, leisure and sport at the council, said: “This pictorial celebration demonstrates our pride in our townspeople and we hope it will inspire other Stevenage people to go on to great things. As well as helping to improve the experience of visitors to our town centre, the pictures will be a great talking point, history lesson and stir up some fond memories for people.”

A second pictorial, featuring personalities from the arts world who also have a connection to Stevenage, will be installed on the other wall at a later date.
