More than 800 scouts and guides, and younger members of both movements, marched through Hitchin on Sunday as part of their annual St George's Day parade.
The march is traditionally held on the Sunday closest to St George’s Day – England’s patron saint is also the patron of the scouting movement.
Hundreds of proud parents and members of the public watched as youngsters aged between six to 18 paraded in uniform along Bancroft and the High Street, led by the Epping Forest Pipe Band.
The march convened in Market Place around an artificial campfire for a short service before ending with traditional campfire songs including: ‘We’re from Hitchin, mighty, mighty Hitchin.’
Tony Hankin, district commissioner for Hitchin Scouts, said: “We’re delighted members of girl guiding were able to join our St George’s day parade this year.”
Bernard Higgs, district executive of Hitchin scouts added: “It was a vibrant community-based event – a fantastic affair with a lovely atmosphere.”
Simon Bredin, pipe major of The Epping Forest Pipe Band, said: “It was a privilege to lead the parade.”
