A former chief executive of Stevenage Borough Council, who was instrumental in supporting businesses through the 1980s recession, has died.
Rev Michael Banks was director of leisure services and chief executive from 1979 to 1983.
He oversaw the transition from the Stevenage Development Corporation to the current borough council, the completion of Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre, and a number of initiatives to support businesses through the 1980s recession – such as the creation of the Business and Technology Centre.
Stevenage’s deputy mayor, Simon Speller, said: “Michael’s influence and dedication to Stevenage can still be seen across the town through the Stevenage Community Trust, the creation of the Roaring Meg Retail Park and the initial investment in Stevenage Football Club’s ground.”
Mr Banks died peacefully at home in Saxthorpe, Norfolk, on July 5. His funeral will be held in the village church tomorrow, Thursday.
