Steve Meekings says Stevenage offered his son Josh a deal before withdrawing it by text

THE father of former Ipswich Town defender Josh Meekings has hit out at Stevenage over the collapse of his son’s proposed move to the Lamex Stadium.

Meekings was the Ipswich under-18s captain last season but was released this summer before being invited for a trial at Boro where, his father says, he impressed enough to earn a contract only to have it withdrawn by text.

Meekings has since gone to seek his fortune north of the border after signing a deal with Scottish Premier side Inverness Caledonian Thistle, but his father Steve told the Haverhill Echo: “He could not be further away from home (at Caledonian) but Terry Butcher has been really good to him and it has been totally different to Stevenage where he played four times there, did really well and got as far as being offered a contract before he got a text saying it was not an offer and just to see if they could afford him.”
