Former Hitchin maternity hospital in multi-million pound revamp

THE former maternity hospital in Hitchin is to get a multi-million pound revamp, with the existing building demolished to be replaced with a brand new care home.

Foxholes Nursing Home, which is based at the Pirton Road site, is replacing its 35-bed structure with a new 110-bed home.

The project will cost 6.75m, and is expected to create a number of new jobs when it is finished in July 2012.

Usha Gandecha, who owns the home, said: “This has been a long time in the planning so it is great to see the work underway.

“This project sees us tripling the number of residents we will take in, meaning that we will need to take on additional local staff to serve and care for the increased number of residents we will have.”
