Five people were injured by flying debris after a car ploughed through a central reservation on a busy Stevenage road yesterday evening.

A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing a car, driving while unfit and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

Police caught up with the man after he fled the scene at St George’s Way and made off behind Stevenage Swimming Centre.

The road was closed in both directions while the car was removed.

The driver remains in police custody.
