A LEADING pharmaceutical company in Stevenage hopes to massively extend its premises to develop its research and development.

GlaxoSmithKline, in Gunnels Wood Road, has submitted a planning application to the borough council to extend its floor space by 60,000 square metres by erecting six new buildings on the north western section of the site which is currently vacant.

It also hopes to create an additional 1,200 car parking spaces following demolition of existing buildings, build a new conference centre and extend the computer centre on the north eastern section of the site.

To accommodate the increased level of traffic that would be generated by the development it also proposes to add a new entry into GSK from the A1(M) roundabout at Stevenage South.

A spokesman for the East of England Development Agency, which supports the application, said: "The employment area is an established and successful business park and forms part of the Hertfordshire pharmaceutical cluster.

"The Regional Economic Strategy (RES) seeks to maintain and build upon the quality of clusters within the region in order that they can compete both nationally and internationally.

"The application if permitted would lead to an enhanced role for the site for this world leading company which is already a centre for excellence."

The application is due to be discussed at a meeting of SBC's planning and development committee next Tuesday (August 12).
