Firefighters continue to battle 600 tonne straw fire near Hitchin

Fire services are currently battling a haystack fire near Hitchin which caught alight last night.

Crews from Hitchin, Stevenage, Welwyn Garden City and Letchworth and Baldock attended the blaze on Pirton Road throughout the night.

They were called to the scene just after 8pm after 14 members of the public dialled 999.

A spokesman from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue said about 600 tonnes of straw were thought to be on fire in the open.
