The spring weather brought people out in their gardens at the weekend and that meant Herts Fire and Rescue Service was kept busy putting out bonfires and blazes started by people’s over zealous use of weed burners.

Stevenage fire crews had to put out a fire involving a conservatory at Holly Copse on Saturday, and later they used backpack sprayers to put out a blaze that had taken hold in a hedgerow in Lonsdale Road at 3pm.

At 5pm Stevenage crews dealt with a garden fire in Birch Road at Woolmer Green and then doused a rubbish fire at York Road in Stevenage at 6.58pm.

Herts Fire Control Tweeted: “Crews from Stevenage have attended two incidents today where weed burners have caused garden fires. “Avoid using them in dry spells and be sure to keep the flame away from dead or brown material that might ignite.”

The firefighters also found time to take part in training on how to deal with hazardous substances.
