A much-loved and popular bar in Biggleswade will be pulling its last pint for punters at the end of this year it has been announced.
The Lounge Bistro and Wine bar based at The Old Maltings in Church Street is closing after New Years Eve with a goodbye party set for Friday, December 23.
The bar, run by co-owners John McGinley and Jonathon Medlock has seen an outpouring of solidarity and support since they posted the news on social media. There has even been a petition started that has already gained more than 1,250 signatures – and attracted nearly 500 likes and 300 comments on Facebook.
John said movingly: “It is with much sadness we confirm the Lounge will be closing.
“Regrettably, the entire site on Church Street has now been sold for development, which will mean we are unable to continue trading here at The Old Maltings, our home or the past nine years.

“Both Jonathan and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our loyal and much-valued patrons, for all their custom over these many years.
“It has been a pleasure to serve and know each of you as special and appreciated guests here.
“For the ‘Lounge family’ who have worked with us it has been an incredible journey with you and for that we will be forever grateful – you made the Lounge – thank you for making our dream happen here.”
Jessica Cobb, who raised the petition to save it wrote on change.org: “The Lounge is a wonderful asset to Biggleswade and The Maltings building is an important part of the town’s history. There are many people who will mourn the loss of such a wonderful venue, John and his brilliant team of staff.
“Let’s try and save The Lounge from being closed down and turned into more housing.”
Central Beds Council confirmed to the Comet there has been no planning application lodged with the council by the owner of the Maltings yet.
Supporter Helen Maza posted on the petition: “The building holds significant and historical links to an increasingly modern and expanding town. With the arrival of the new retail park, it’s even more important to keep hold of buildings with character.
“As a business it’s an excellent example of a small independent enterprise having a positive impact on the local community – and provides the pleasure that comes with enjoying a beautifully restored building.”
John told the Comet: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the response we’ve had.”
