Women’s rights campaigners will have more of a presence in Stevenage from today.
National charity the Fawcett Society fights for gender equality and women’s rights, and is opening a branch at Daneshill House on Danestrete.
Key speakers will be the charity’s chief executive Sam Smethers and former Stevenage MP Barbara Follett - a lifelong campaigner for women’s equality.
Stevenage’s Teresa Callaghan, a campaigner behind the idea, said: “The great thing about the Fawcett Society is that it welcomes anyone who believes in its aims, regardless of gender or politics. We want to extend that welcome to anyone in Stevenage and North Herts who believes in the work of the Fawcett Society.
“As well as campaigning locally for gender equality, we want to create a safe place for women to talk about the things that matter to them.
“It is political with a small ‘p’ – the key issue is a belief in equality, not party politics.”
