A Stevenage pub had to delay its opening time today (Friday) after an extractor fan caught fire in the men's toilets.

The small fire filled part of the Marquis of Lorne in Stevenage High Street with black smoke but the emergency was quickly dealt with by two crews from Stevenage fire station, some who wore breathing apparatus, just before the pub was due to open at noon.

Landlord Tony Bamford said: "The fire was caused by an electrical fault and there was a lot of smoke but we are like the Windmill we are never closed.

"I have called out the Greene King brewery electricians to come and inspect the damage and the wiring in the toilet and hopefully carry out repairs. But we are open for business as usual despite all the fire engines outside.
