A family fun day aimed at raising money to support a one-year-old girl who is battling leukaemia will be held this Sunday.
The all-day Mods and Rock Fest at The Royal Oak on Stevenage’s Walkern Road is aimed at raising money to adapt the home of Mia Percival, who was diagnosed with leukaemia in January.
Mia, who lives in Stevenage, has endured chemotherapy, blood transfusions and heavy medication. Her immune system is so weak she spent Easter in hospital with rhinovirus, parainfluenza and croup.
Her auntie, Nicola Minett, said: “Mia was finally discharged and has been spending some precious time at home with her amazing family.
“Her new treatment regime is about to begin and she will have a tough few months, but every treatment will bring her closer to beating this.
“Thank you all for your support and love, and please consider donating blood, platelets and stem cells to help Mia and many others get the transfusions they desperately need.”
Fiona Minett-Watkins, another of Mia’s aunties, said: “It’s still so hard to stop and actually think what Mia is facing. It’s unfair and cruel, but we have no choice and just have to go through this. No child or family should have to go through this.”
Mia’s mum, Lisa, has quit her job to be with her daughter, and Mia’s dad, Alan, needs to take extensive time off work to be there for his daughter and their four-year-old son James.
Doctors estimate Mia will need two-and-a-half years of treatment, and her parents need to make sure their home is safe and ultra-clean for their daughter. To do this, they need to adapt their home, as well as replace and purchase new equipment, furniture and appliances.
The wider family have set up a fundraising page to support Lisa and Alan, which has so far raised more than £13,000.
Sunday’s event at The Royal Oak will start at noon and finish at 12.30am and will include a children’s disco, face painting, bouncy castle, ice cream van and barbecue. A DJ will also be playing Mod and Britpop classics and there will be a raffle in the evening.
