AN engineering factory had to be evacuated today (Thursday) after fire broke out in the ceiling of the building.

Emergency services were called to Viking Johnson in Wilbury Way, Hitchin, at 1.14am after smoke was seen coming from a space in the ceiling.

Firefighters from Hitchin attended the scene and 37 people were evacuated.

Workers were allowed back into the building 40 minutes later and afterwards a company spokesman said damage was minimal.
