Ex-councillor pleads not guilty to Letchworth historic rape charge

A FORMER councillor has pleaded not guilty to raping a girl more than three decades ago.

Richard Harman, of Denby in Letchworth GC, appeared at Cambridge Crown Court on Friday morning accused of raping a girl under the age of 16 between 1978 and 1979.

The 50-year-old, who confirmed his name before denying the offence, resigned from his Letchworth South East seat on North Herts District Council in September after being charged.

Judge Gareth Hawkesworth granted Harman conditional bail and adjourned the hearing for trial at Cambridge Crown Court on May 7, 2013.
