Stevenage have drafted in former Birmingham City academy goalkeeper Callum Preston following an injury to back-up stopper Chris Day.

A calf strain to 41-year-old Day left Boro without a back-up keeper to number one Jamie Jones for the weekend, so boss Darren Sarll brought in Preston.

The 20-year-old has joined on non-contract terms and was on the bench for Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Wycombe Wanderers.

Sarll, said: “We’re delighted in his trust in us in the capacity that he’s joining us.

“Like anything for young people like Callum, there’s always opportunities and the chance to force your way through what might seem a closed door, he’s trying his hardest to force his way through.”

Preston has previously spent time with Stevenage having worked with Sarll when he was academy manager before moving up with the first team under then boss Graham Westley.

Following Westley’s departure from the club and Teddy Sheringham’s appointment as first team manager in May 2015, Preston followed Westley out the door.

However, Sarll has shown faith in the youngster, who played for Crawley against Stevenage on Boxing Day, adding: “He’s a high quality young man in terms of his personality and we’ve seen him play at League Two at a high level so we are delighted to have him in.”
