A TEAM of firefighters have walked their way to more than a £1,000 of sponsorship money for charity.

Six members of White Watch from Baldock and Letchworth Fire Station set themselves the challenge of walking the 84 miles along Hadrian's Wall in just four days.

Tom Andrews, Phil Gray, Ian Michell, Tom Barrett, Sean Costello and Ronnie Barker, along with Nikki Harvey and trusty driver Bob Fievez, headed off to Carlisle directly after finishing a night shift and started the walk at 3pm the same day.

The team was blessed with good weather for the challenge and despite the distance the only injuries sustained were blisters and aches and pains.

But while the human members of the group managed to stay fit, their support vehicle, which was used to transport them to their starting points each day and back to the two fire stations they slept in, broke down on day three.

Thankfully the officer in charge of Holtwhistle Fire Station stepped in to help them out so they could get to the day's starting point, and their own vehicle was soon repaired.

They made it to their destination, Wallsend, at just after 6pm on the fourth day.

So far the challenge has raised £1,054, although money is still coming in.

The money raised has now been divided between the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund and Headway North Herts and Stevenage.

Mr Barker said: "I would like to thank the team members for all their efforts in the build-up to and the challenge itself, as well as our driver Bob Fievez, station commander Ian McKenzie, station staff and Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue personnel for sponsorship and support.

"I would also like to thank the local community, especially those businesses that have supported us and members of the public who have dug deep in their pockets to provide money for these two worthy charities."
