RETIREMENT is looming for Sally Edwards after 16 years of "tremendous service and great leadership" of Hitchin Girls' School.

The end of the academic year next summer will see her stepping down as headteacher.

"She will leave behind a legacy of achievement for all students and successful management of immense change during those years, for which we are all in her debt," said governors' chairman Colin Minton.

Her replacement will be Frances Manning who currently is deputy head of Cheshunt School, a mixed comprehensive of just over 1,000 students in the 11-18 age range.

"We are convinced and confident that Mrs Manning has the inspiration and leadership needed to meet the further challenges of change in education in the years ahead," said Mr Minton.

"She will provide continuity of our vision that Every Child Matters to the highest professional and personal standards.
