Engines from Hitchin and Stevenage fire stations attended the scene between Junction 9 for Letchworth Gate and Junction 8 for Stevenage after being called at 4.33pm.

The car was well alight on the hard shoulder, and a hosereel and two sets of breathing apparatus were used to tackle the blaze – which was out by 5pm.

No injuries have been reported, thankfully.

The motorway is congested, but traffic is moving past the scene of the fire.
