POLICE officers and staff are being investigated after an email which contained a graphic video of the horrific death of a black suspect was sent to more than 200 people within Herts Constabulary.

The investigation, which is being supervised by the Independent Police Complaints Commission, could result in disciplinary action.

Herts Police would not confirm if staff from Stevenage, Hitchin, Baldock and Letchworth GC received or passed on the email.

A spokesman said: "We can confirm that it is conducting a wide-ranging and robust investigation into the receipt and subsequent distribution within the organisation of an email image.

"We understand that the email image concerned was the subject of a similar investigation that took place within Merseyside police in March, which generated national interest.

"We believed the email image concerned originates from America."

Detective sergeant Alicia Moore, chairman of the Hertfordshire Black Police Association, said: "The inquiry team has consulted closely with us since the beginning of this investigation and to date we are satisfied with the course of action which is being taken."

The chair of Herts Police county independent advisory group, Omar Ismail, said: "While we share the concerns of the constabulary's senior management that this email has been circulated within Hertfordshire Constabulary we would not want it to detract from some of the excellent progress in community relations that has taken place in Hertfordshire in the past few years.
