Youngsters’ green-fingered work in Stevenage has been rewarded to the tune of £100.

Camps Hill Primary School’s gardening and animal care clubs have been jointly awarded the sum after being chosen as the Comet’s Community Heroes for February.

The monthly award, backed by the Roaring Meg Retail and Leisure Park, was presented to the school in Chells Way on Friday in recognition of the work being done by the after-school clubs to grow their own vegetables, rear chickens and look after the environment.

Headteacher Emma Flawn said: “It’s about creating opportunities for the children to learn about the environment and contribute back to the community.

“One of the parents Suzanne Conran helped set it up and continues to volunteer even though her son is no longer at the school.

“We’re very excited to win the award and I think we’ve already decided how to spend the money already!”
