AN exceptionally good year - that is how headmistress Mairin Hegarty described the A-level results at St Francis College in Letchworth GC.

There was a 100 per cent pass rate among the 36 students who sat the exams with 83 per cent of them gaining A or B grades, and 54 per cent of those getting As.

"I think it was the best ever although next year I am expecting a better crop," said Miss Hegarty.

Among the top achievers at St Francis this time round was Lily Ryan from Knebworth who got straight As in English Literature, French, Latin and religious studies.

In the last subject she was in the top 10 of the 5,000 students who sat it nationally.

Lily is looking forward to reading philosophy at Trinity College, Cambridge.
