Letchworth students talking up chance of national debate victory

TWO students from a Letchworth GC school are through to the national final of the oldest schools debating competition in the world after coming out top for the region last week.

Jasper Gold and Hero Scott, both Year 11 pupils at St Christopher School, battled their corner for three hours on Wednesday before being declared the winners of the regional final of the annual Cambridge Union Schools Debating Competition.

The pair, who debated two motions on the subjects of development aid and votes for prisoners, will now attend the historic University of Cambridge union on February 16 to compete against other national finalists for the title, as well and having the opportunity to meet with schools minister Nick Gibb.

Staff member Mario May, who is responsible for debating at the Barrington Road school, said: “The debates were lively, well informed and intellectually demanding, with Jasper and Hero arguing logically, cogently and passionately.”
