A GIANT version of a school’s sandwich design greeted students last week who took part in a fast-food chain’s competition, after they finished runners-up in the national final.

After winning their regional heat, pupils from Fearnhill School in Letchworth GC also received vouchers totalling 750 for their efforts in SUBWAY’s Design-a-Sub challenge.

Team ‘Tranquility’, consisting of 17-year-olds Hannah Rai, Samantha Hutchinson, Beth Savage and Amy Seddon, came up with ‘The Caliente’, a Spanish word meaning hot, which they pitched to a panel of judges.

The quartet’s sub design then became a reality as it was turned into a giant version by staff at SUBWAY’s Letchworth GC store on Thursday.

Johan Snyders, Business Studies leader at the Icknield Way-based school, said: “The students really enjoyed taking part in the challenge.

“It gave them a hands on opportunity and enjoyable way to put their business skills to the test.

“We are extremely proud that we have got so far in the competition.”

SUBWAY entrepreneur Bob Moodliar added: “The pupils really have done a fantastic job to get so far in the competition and should be extremely proud of their achievements.

“We were really impressed with the entry and the level of work that the team obviously put into it.

“They showed understanding of the brief and came up with some really fantastic ideas, coming across very well in the pitch.”

The competition winners were South Essex College who designed ‘The Fireball’ to celebrate Southend and as a tribute to one of its biggest rides at local attraction, Adventure Island.

The new sub will be launched across the whole region in August 2011.
