A ‘Knockout’ sandwich which was the winner of a regional competition is going on sale today (Monday).

Students at North Hertfordshire College’s Peter Jones Enterprise Academy in Broadway, Letchworth GC, were declared the winners of a competition run by SUBWAY, which asked budding entrepreneurs from schools, colleges and sixth forms to design and market a new sandwich.

Now their ‘sub’, named The Knockout, is available to buy in stores across the east of England.

The winning design – combining steak, pepperoni, jalapeños and salad – was crowned the winner after entries from 80 teams made up of colleges and schools from across East Anglia.

The students – Ollie Weston, Sinead O’Brien, Manny Shoker, Oli Hubbard, and Sammy Storton – emerged victorious having presented a Dragons’ Den style pitch in front of a judging panel at Cambridge University.

SUBWAY entrepreneur Bob Moodliar, who chaired the judging panel, said: “The Knockout Sub from the students at North Hertfordshire College really stood out as an excellent design. After all the team’s hard work it is brilliant to see their marketing materials and concepts come to fruition and launch in stores.

“The SUBWAY franchise is made up of thousands of entrepreneurs and it’s great if we can pass on some of our knowledge to the younger generation, who may even consider franchising as an option for owning their own business. We hope customers enjoy The Knockout Sub as much as we do!”

Sarah Lee, business enterprise manager at North Hertfordshire College, added: “The project gave the pupils a great practical learning experience. The opportunity to work with such a well-recognised local business added both excitement and an increased depth of understanding to their knowledge throughout the project. Seeing the pupils’ marketing materials in store and people buying the Sub really is superb.”

The Knockout is available to buy for a limited period at SUBWAY stores in Hitchin, Letchworth GC and Stevenage.
