THERE were tears of joy in Stevenage when students picked up their GCSE results. Two hundred and eight students took GCSE exams at John Henry Newman School and 81 per cent of them achieved five or more A*-C grades and 36 per cent were awarded at least one A or A*.

Jane Goring, deputy Headteacher, said: "We are delighted with this year's GCSE results. We are particularly pleased with the significant number of pupils who have achieved a high number of A and A* grades in the majority of their subjects.

"We are very proud of these successes; happy for our pupils, pleased for their parents and thrilled for our hardworking staff.
