Loo rolls or lessons? That’s the choice an activist group says many schools now face, ahead of an action day in Hitchin this weekend.
The Hitchin Parents Against School Cuts Campaign will be collecting donations of toilet rolls in Market Place this Saturday, and passing them on to schools.
Campaign co-founder Kay Tart told the Comet this was inspired by a school in Maidenhead that had asked parents to buy it loo paper, as schools struggle amid a real-terms funding squeeze.
“With funding in Hertfordshire so stretched we want to donate something practical to the schools, but we also want to send a message to the government,” said Kay.
“At The Priory School last week, our MP Bim Afolami said shortages in supplies, and teachers replacing them from their salaries, were not ‘indicative of funding’.
“Unfortunately they are, and we think a great big pile of toilet paper rolls in Market Place might make him and the government think again.”
The action day is to last from 10am to 3pm.
