Pupils at Letchworth’s St Thomas More RC Primary School have caught the cycling bug after the unveiling of a swish new £8,500 bike and scooter shelter.
The shelter can cater for 16 cycles and 32 scooters with contributions from Councillor Terry Hone, who represents Letchworth South at County Call, Herts County Council’s Safer Routes to School Programme and the school’s parents’ association helping to foot the bill.
On average only two per cent of pupils cycle or scoot to lessons but head Jane Perry hopes the new facilities will help the Highfield school hit a target of 15 per cent by the end of the summer term.
“We have already seen the numbers increase since it was installed,” she said. “As it gets warmer we anticipate the interest in cycling and scooters will continue to grow.”
Councillor Terry Hone, pictured with Mrs Perry, school travel advisor Anthony Collier and pupils Matthew Ledwold, Ethan Brown, Olivia Trodden and Tom Smith, said: “I am delighted to be able to help the school promote cycling to its pupils.”
