Nine young bridge players from Hitchin have been to the House of Lords to test their skills.
The children, from the Highover School bridge club, enjoyed a tour of the Palace of Westminster and met Hitchin MP Bim Afolami before playing bridge with members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Bridge.
Highover’s bridge club was set up 18 months ago with the help of Hitchin Bridge Club, and teacher John Rogan said the children were benefiting from playing the game.
“I have seen a distinct improvement in the children’s mathematical skills, and also in their problem-solving, logic, and strategic thinking,” he said.
“As they are playing as a partnership it has also benefited their communication and social skills. But, above all, they really enjoy it and have fun.”
At the end of the visit, organised in conjunction with the English Bridge Union and the charity English Bridge Education & Development, the children received bronze-level bridge certificates.
