There’s something about Fiddler On The Roof that attracts attention in North Herts – after Letchworth Arcadians staged the musical favourite last year, students at Baldock’s Knights Templar School are taking on the popular tale of a Jewish father and his five daughters in imperial Russia next week.

Originally staged on Broadway in 1964, it was the first musical to top 3,000 performances and held the record for more than a decade before being toppled by Grease.

The Baldock production is not quite so ambitious – it opens on Tuesday evening and there are further performances each evening until Friday.

The curtain goes up in the school’s main hall at 7pm and tickets are £8 for adults, £6 concessions.

The school’s head of creative and performing arts Andrew Sills, who is directing, said: “This has been a huge undertaking for everyone involved.

“It’s a classic musical that everyone knows and loves. Expectations are high following stunning successes with The Sound of Music and The Crucible in the last two years.”

Joe Nelson, who plays Tevye – a part made famous by Zero Mostel and Topol – has been part of the annual production since he started at the school. He said: “It’s a huge honour to be given the lead role, I can’t wait for opening night!’
