Almost 40 per cent of passes at John Henry Newman were graded A* to A, with the head calling it a “tremendous result”.

The overall pass rate at the Stevenage school was 99.6 per cent, with 85 per cent achieving A* to C grades, 38 per cent A* or As. Of the overall passes 65 per cent were B or above.

Eighty per cent of pupils gained a place at their first choice university.

Charlie Anderson, director of sixth form, said “The students and staff have worked incredibly hard and thoroughly deserve this success, which could never have been achieved without the exceptional support of our parents. We are absolutely delighted with these results which are a testament to the exceptional leadership of our headteacher Michael Kelly who retires at the end of this academic year.”
