There were plenty of smiles on display at schools in Stevenage, North Herts and Central Beds this morning for A-level results day – take a look at our gallery of pictures capturing that special moment for many students.

Nationally, UCAS figures show 424,000 students have been accepted to UK universities and colleges so far this year – up three per cent on A-level results day in 2015 and the highest number recorded on such a day.

There are 201,000 UK 18-year-old applicants placed – two per cent higher than in 2015 despite the population falling by 2.3 per cent.

There are also more acceptances from older age groups, with acceptances for those aged 25 or older from the UK up eight per cent.
