Youngsters at a Stevenage school ended the year on a high after the town’s mayor paid a visit to celebrate the openings of two new facilities – which coincides with the school’s 40th anniversary.
Stevenage mayor John Lloyd was on hand at Woolenwick Infant & Nursery School to mark the unveiling of a new treehouse and extension – providing a new classroom, staffroom and meeting room.
The extension at the Bridge Road West site also frees up space for a bigger dining area for pupils, as well as space for small group activities.
Headteacher Usha Dhorajiwala said: “At Woolenwick, in line with our Reggio Emilia inspired philosophy, we feel it is important to the children’s enquiries and feelings.
“Our children have wanted a less noisy, less cramped dining room for a long time – and we wanted our children to have positive dining experiences. The new area, complete with shabby chic welsh dresser and a cutlery clock, gives the children more space in a much more relaxing and inviting setting.”
Year 2 pupil Ritjshua came up with a treehouse idea back in the autumn term, telling Councillor Lloyd that if she was mayor she’d build one to mark the school’s birthday. Now, thanks to community fundraising, the project has become a reality.
