George Clark, who lives in Stevenage, served with the Royal Army Service Corps’ 7th Field Dressing Station as an ambulance driver throughout the conflict and was awarded the Dunkirk Medal, the France and Germany Star, the 1939–1945 Star and the War Medal 1939–1945.

He marked his centenary with a party at Southend Close Centre in Stevenage.

His grandson, Daniel Field, gave a short speech mentioning some of the amazing stories from George’s life, including when he waded out to a rowing boat from the crowded beach of Dunkirk - a decision which ultimately saved his life.

George, who had a career as a London bus driver and later a lorry driver, was married to Violet, who died 17 years ago. He has a daughter, Julie Page, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also has a late son, Steven.
