The scrap metal blighting the Cambridge Road bridge in Hitchin has been removed by Network Rail following The Comet highlighting the eyesore.

Parts of a bus had been strewn across the grass verge on the north side of the bridge since last week, with the words Arriva clearly pictured.

A spokesman for Arriva said: “Alerted to scrap metal with our brand on it, we inspected it and confirmed it was scrap metal which must have fallen from a truck – rather than anything we disposed of locally. Arriva buses in the area are blue. We follow strict guidelines for the disposal of all our waste including metal. This bus has been scrapped and crushed prior to being moved – it’s not something we do ourselves. It’s a shame those responsible have not cleared up.”

North Herts District Council reported the rubbish to landowner Network Rail on November 4 and Network Rail confirmed traffic management measures were required to safely clear the site after a grab lorry was sent.
