DRIVERS in North Herts could face up to a 100 per cent increase in car parking charges.
Fees in Letchworth GC and Hitchin are being increased by the district council.
The overall average increase is 40 per cent but it varies from 16.6 per cent up to 100 per cent, depending on car park and duration of stay.
The greatest increase will be seen in stays of between two and three hours, with many car parks in both towns seeing fees double from £1 to £2 for this duration.
The increases are part of an attempt by NHDC to save £1.8 million in its 2006/7 budget.
The proposed increases will be discussed by the Hitchin area committee next Tuesday and by the Letchworth area committee the following day.
