A WOMAN has escaped serious injury after her car careered off a road and smashed into a fence, causing a wooden post to shatter the windscreen and narrowly miss impaling her.

Paramedics were alerted to a car leaving the A1(M) on the northbound carriageway between junctions 8 and 9 just before 3.30pm today (Wednesday).

Ambulance crews from Letchworth GC and Stevenage attended the scene.

Gary Sanderson, spokesman for the ambulance service, attended the incident and said: "Luckily, the woman driving the car escaped with no injuries.

"Thankfully she did not have anyone sitting in the front seat as this could have turned into a tragedy.

"She is a very lucky lady indeed."

The shaken woman was taken to Lister Hospital in Stevenage to be checked over.
