People are being encouraged not to throw away Christmas cards and instead recycle them at supermarkets in Hitchin, Letchworth and Stevenage.

From now until January 14, Sainsbury’s customers will be able to hand in used cards at a collection point at the front of the stores.

The supermarket will make a donation to environmental organisation Forest Stewardship Council UK based on the volume of cards collected.

The charity’s Rosie Teasdale said: “The Sainsbury’s donation provides essential support for our education and awareness-raising work, helping us to support people in the UK protect the world’s forests.”

Last year Sainsbury’s donated almost £9,000 to FSC from the initiative at stores across the UK.
