A doctor has been charged following allegations of indecent assaults on patients.

Dr Robert Lewis, 48, has been charged with eight counts of indecent assault which relate to pre-employment medicals carried out during the period of 1999-2003.

Dr Lewis, of Northbridge Street, Shefford, will appear at Bedford Magistrates Court on December 3 to answer the charges.

The GP was arrested at his home in Shefford on January 29 and suspended from Larksfield Surgery in Stotfold, where he practised, pending an investigation.

NHS England and the General Medical Council have been aware of the investigation, which included sending confidential letters to women who may have come into contact with Dr Lewis on a professional basis.
