Police investigating a distraction burglary targeting an elderly lady in Letchworth have today released an E-fit image of someone they would like to identify.

The burglary, which happened around 3.30pm on Wednesday, May 17, saw a man steal a safe, jewellery and cash.

He knocked on the woman’s front door and said there was an issue with the water, meaning he had to check the pressure.

The victim became suspicious, but the man entered. He asked her to clear out the cupboard under the sink and run the water.

During this time he left the room, and the victim called a neighbour.

The man then left, with the victim finding the safe, jewellery and cash were missing.

Investigating officer Sally Johnson said: “I would like to hear from anyone who thinks they may know the identity of the person pictured as they may be able to assist with our enquiries.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to advise people to always remain vigilant around unexpected callers and never let anyone into your home who you aren’t expecting.

“Genuine callers will always have valid identification and will not mind coming back at another time when you can arrange to have someone with you who you trust.

“Our message is simple – if you aren’t sure, don’t open the door.”

A police spokeswoman said that to protect the victim, the force was not identifying the street where the burglary happened.

Anyone who thinks they may know the identity of the person pictured should call the Operation Manhunt unit on the non-emergency number 101, quoting crime reference G2/17/1127.

Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or crimestoppers-uk.org.
