THE area earmarked for redevelopment at a town centre site could be increased.

North Hertfordshire District Council has had discussions with the head lessee of Churchgate in Hitchin about the site and a council spokesman said the plans in the current planning brief are not big enough.

The spokesman said: "Following consideration of the options of how to best progress the redevelopment of the Churchgate centre, the Hitchin Town Centre Working Party and Cabinet concluded that an area wider than that shown in the brief be considered for potential development (including the post office site) as a scheme strictly in accordance with the brief was no longer viable."

The spokesman said no decision has yet been made and that any scheme would require planning permissions and there would be a full public consultation at that stage.
