Stevenage manager Darren Sarll was delighted with his side’s first Sky Bet League Two win of the season as they beat Luton Town 2-1 at the Lamex Stadium.

Striker Matt Godden struck a 95th minute winner, his first league goal, after Connor Hunte had cancelled out Cameron McGeehan’s first half opener for Luton.

Sarll said: “I’m delighted for Matt to get off the mark and I’m delighted to win the game.”

On the manner of the victory, he said: “I don’t think it’s going to do much for the longevity of my receding hairline.

“I made lots of comments about the quality of people at this club and you only get those type of results with a quality of person.

“I just felt they did what we expect them to do.

“The manner of which we won the game elevates everything.”

There were plenty of backs to the wall moments and Stevenage defended resolutely against the side who were top of the table at the start of the day.

“The minute I saw that [dying for the cause type-play] I felt a little bit of a celebration that my boys were back and we were fighting because first half I thought we started well but it took too long after that to really imprint ourselves on the game,” he said.

The half-time introduction of winger Tom Pett improved the hosts attacking threat.

“We want that from Tom Pett every week, why should we expect any less?,” added Sarll.

“I turned away when he squared [for the winning goal] as I thought ‘shoot man’ and Matty Godden, who has waited for five games for a chance of that nature, just took it very calmly.”
