The second half of the month brings a number of authors to David’s Bookshop for reading and signing sessions.

This evening from 7.30pm, editor Katie Macdonald will be at the store to discuss her book, The Conscientious Objector’s Wife, which tells a 100-year-old love story across two settings – Letchworth, and a First World War prison.

On 4 November 1916, Frank Sunderland, a pacifist from Letchworth, was formally arrested for refusing to join the armed services under the Military Service Act 1916.

His wife Lucy remained living in Letchworth with their three children and the couple wrote to each other as often as they could. Their letters are rare surviving evidence of working-class war time experience.

In editing these letters Katie Macdonald needed to research nearly two hundred footnotes. The book explores Letchworth’s welcoming attitude to war time refugees, the elections of 1918 and 1919, and the remarkable numbers of men and women in political partnerships.

On Monday, the Letchworth store welcomes Sunday Times journalist Philip Norman, who will discuss and sign his book, Slowhand, The Life and Music of Eric Clapton.

The biography delves into the life story and career of the acclaimed star, his consumption of drugs and alcohol, and reveals when he fell in love with Pattie Boyd – the wife of his best friend George Harrison. Philip Norman will be at the store from 7.30pm.

Bestselling novelist Joanne Harris will by showcasing her latest novel, The Blue Salt Road, at David’s Bookshop on Wednesday.

The story is a fairy-tale of love, loss and revenge. It follows the life of a nameless man who is drawn into a new world by passion, but kept there by trickery. His memories are taken from him and he is separated from his own people. The author of 15 bestselling novels, including Chocolat, will be in Letchworth from 7.30pm.

Next Monday, Doctor Who script writer and novelist Ben Aaronovitch will discuss and sign his latest novel in the River of London series, Lies Sleeping.
