Three cycling groups have raised more than £10,000 between them to support Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice in Moggerhanger.
The five-strong Blunham Cycling Team of Richard Darlow, Justin Folbigg, Andy Hurman, Mark Jewers and Stewart Huff completed the 100-mile Prudential Ride London challenge on Sunday.
The event celebrates the legacy for cycling created by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Richard, who with his friends raised more than £5,000 for St John’s, said afterwards: “It was an amazing experience for a fantastic cause – we can’t wait until next year.”
Postmen Darren Auty, Paul Bass, Dave Farrar, Gary Gerrard and Mick Tobin got on their bikes and, with their support team of Ian Binney and Andy Young, collected almost £2,000 for the 15-bed hospice.
They rode 200 miles from Bedford to Hunstanton in Norfolk and back again in aid of Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice and the Royal Mail’s Rowland Hill Fund.
Darren said: “We all cycle together after work or on a Sunday and decided to do a charity ride.
“Friends, family, work colleagues and people we deliver to have been good to us with sponsorship and support.”
The third group to use pedal power to benefit the hospice was from Bedford’s Aircraft Research Association.
Mechanical services manager Pete Ogilvie led a 13-strong band on the 100km Nightrider London event and handed over £3,000 to the hospice last week.
Pete said: “I wanted to do the ride and local charities need help.
“I thought we’d raise £1,000, I didn’t think we would raise as much as we did so I’m really pleased.”
Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice needs to raise £1.4 million to continue to provide incredible care this year.
St John’s interim fundraising head Cath Cole: “A huge thank you to all of the cyclists who got on their saddles to support us.
“Lots of hard work, time and dedication went into their rides and we appreciate the efforts they have made to help us continue to provide incredible care in the area.”
