More than 220 boys and girls in North Herts had the chance to play cricket this week.

Sports-mad pupils from 15 different schools in our area including a number from Hitchin took part in two cricket tournaments spread over Wednesday and Thursday at Fairfield Park, Letchworth.

The occasion was backed by 10 volunteers and saw 53 cricket matches played which included 92 girls and 134 boys compete.

The event was backed by North Herts School Sport Partnership Advice – who provide support and resources to youth sport, help to organise competitions and

festivals – as well as offering leadership and volunteering and engagement and inclusion programmes.

Jay Livermore from North Herts SSP told the Comet: “It was fantastic to see so many different schools attend our Kwik Cricket events last week.

“Huge thanks to Letchworth Cricket Club and Herts Cricket for their support in helping us give lots of young people the opportunity to participate.

Wilshere-Dacre Junior Academy also took part in the tournament with teacher Dean Horsley saying: “It was a great experience for the Wilshere-Dacre cricket team to take part in such a great event.

“The boys thoroughly enjoyed their day and all the matches were played in a great spirit – the game of cricket was most definitely the winner!

“Well done also the North Herts SSP and all the volunteers who helped the event run so smoothly.”

The winners from both days – William Ransom Primary School – advance through to the Herts county finals in July.
