Drug dealers had a rude awakening after police officers forced entry to their flat during a dawn raid.

Around a dozen police officers swooped on the property in Baldock as part of a massive operation across three counties.

Two men were arrested at the scene and a packet, thought to contain either crack or heroin, was seized by police.

At least one of the men is known to the police and had been under surveillance for some time.

A resident living close to the address said: "It's been totally obvious and I think a lot of people have noticed. I have not felt safe recently but I obviously feel safer now. It's reassuring to see the police."

Pc Steve Gibbs of the Baldock community team said: "Baldock is not a den of iniquity. We are just helping to make a safe place even safer. I was aware of the community concern about these activities and it's nice that the community can return to some sense of normality in that area."

Police are applying to magistrates tomorrow (Friday) for a three-month closure order of the property, owned by North Hertfordshire Homes, under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003.

The tenants also face eviction from their home, if a conviction is secured, in accordance with NHH policy.
