A CARE worker has been honoured by Hertfordshire County Council for carrying out 30 years' service with the authority.

Roy Burgess, a senior community care officer at the Old Grammar School in Letchworth GC, was presented with John Lewis vouchers at a ceremony at County Hall last week.

Mr Burgess joined the council in 1976 at the Stevenage assessment centre. He has also worked as a social worker and as part of the community learning disability team.

Others council workers who attended the ceremony to receive awards were Julie Mellor, Richard Hince, Veronica Crook and Andy Chapman-Amey, who had all reached the 20-year landmark this year.

Ms Mellor, who works at Lister Hospital, is a committed care officer.

For the previous years spent with the council she worked in children's residential care.

She said: "I'll be in Hitchin market or somewhere and I'll hear someone calling my name and it will be someone I knew from back then. They will come over and give me a hug, and they've got their own family now, so that is really nice.

"When something like that happens you feel your work is very rewarding."

Other workers who will pass the 20-year landmark this year, but were unable to attend the ceremony, are Angela Day, Christl Squires and Gillian London.
