More than £11,000 has been raised to help the family of a holidaymaker from Stevenage who was tragically killed in an Ibiza street brawl at the weekend.
Spanish police said Conor Spraggs, 23, died in the town of San Antonio at 3.30am local time on Sunday morning – hours before he had been set to fly home.
The former Thomas Alleyne student, who worked with luxury furniture, was reportedly staying in San Antonio Bay when he was involved in a fight with other holidaymakers near the seafront.
Conor’s friend Bradley Pearce has launched an online fundraiser to help bring his body back to the UK and cover the costs of his funeral. More than £11,000 has been donated so far, by 416 supporters – just short of a £12,000 target.
On the crowdfunding page, Bradley wrote: “Conor was tragically killed on his last day of his holiday in Ibiza. We are trying to raise enough money to fly his body home so he can be back with his famiy and put to rest in his home town.
“Conor was a gentle soul with a heart of gold, who is going to be deeply missed by family and friends and anyone who knew him.”
Those leaving comments included one who wrote: “Heartbreaking and absolutely devastating news – such a kind, loving, funny soul. Will be missed by so many.”
Another posted: “God’s recruited one of the best.”
A note left with flowers near his home in Stevenage read: “Conor, I can’t believe you’re not here.
“You will be deeply missed. Stevo will never be the same. In our hearts, but never forgotten.”
Spanish police say they have made “a number of arrests” in connection with Conor’s death.
The nationalities of those arrested has not been officially confirmed, but media in Ibiza say police there have been questioning four British citizens.
An autopsy is to be held to try to determine whether Conor was killed by a blow to the head or by his head hitting the ground.
A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokeswoman said: “Our staff are providing assistance to the family of a British man who has died in Ibiza and are in touch with the local authorities, who are investigating.”
