Downton Abbey star Peter Egan is the latest celebrity to back the work of Hitchin-based charity the Dr Hadwen Trust.

Peter, best known for his role in hit 1980s sitcom Ever Decreasing Circles, is also an animal rights advocate who is vice-president of the League Against Cruel Sports and a patron of Compassion in World Farming.

He’s also backing the work of the Portmill Lane-based organisation which is the UK’s leading non-animal medical research charity, which boasts Joanna Lumley as a patron and a string of other high-profile supporters.

He said: “More than four million animals are used annually in medical research in the UK. I find this number shocking not least because, as I understand it, much of this research may have little relevance to humans.

“I am particularly enthusiastic about the work of the Trust because they are developing a practical solution to this problem by funding research which replaces animals. Not only that, but the research they are funding is more relevant to the human condition.”
