The group had a new logo designed for it by students from Samuel Whitbread Community College. It continues to look at crime levels, and at ways of reducing the risk of crime or nuisance. The current crime incident rate is down to 0.8 incidents per day in Shefford. This is mainly due to the work of our Local Beat Officer and his PCSO's. Nuisance youth complaints continue to give concern Mr Mackin reported that speeding is still an issue which is being dealt with as funding is available and we do still get random visits by the Mobile Safety Camera van and Traffic Officers. Visits result in prosecutions and warnings being given. CCTV, the existing camera continues to be useful. A second camera perhaps funded by the business sector had been considered but a survey of traders indicated no interest in funding this at present the Council is awaiting a funding source to appear. Looking forward, Mr Mackin reported that the council was trying to arrange a meeting with a representative from Tesco to find out what their development schedule is for the site. Concerns were also expressed about site condition and safety. Housing development, the number of infill developments are causing further overload on the outdated sewer system. A report on the Town Plan given by Julia Holmes stated that as the Action Plan is a working document it is regularly reviewed by the council committees. Kay Farriss reported on Neighbourhood Watch (formerly Home Watch), more streets are joining the network and Lucas Way is reorganising. Neighbourhood Watch was particularly active in distributing the No cold Calling leaflets and stickers, they still demonstrate and deliver Granny Boots to vulnerable residents. Several of the street co-ordinators meet up at the Community Safety Group. The challenge for this year is to get Clifton Road organized to have full cover as it is one of the main roads into Shefford. If you live in the area and can help with this or live in any road that is not covered and would like to join the network, please contact Kay on 01462 811738.
